SRI PADMAVATHI AMMAVARI TEMPLE

AT

TIRUPATI

This temple is about 5 kilometres from the town of Tirupati. Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple is dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi, who was the consort of Lord Venketswara.

The temple was constructed during the reign of King Thondaman Chakravarthy. It is claimed that worshippers used to first visit this temple and pay homage to Goddess Padmavathi before going to the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati.

Padmavathi was the daughter of Akasha Raja of Thondamandalam. It is believed that after performing oblation to the Gods, he found a baby girl resting on a lotus and named her Padmavathi.

This girl went on to marry Lord Venkateswara. Goddess Padmavathi also is known as Alamelu Manga, which means an inexhaustible source of compassion and love. This temple is also manifested in the significance of femininity in the Hindu tradition.

It is also a shrine of love between the Lord Mahavishu and Goddess Lakshmi. The temple city of Tirupati, is known for its many temples and compelling architecture. But among these the Sri Tiruchanoor Alamelu Mangapuram temple needs to be compulsorily visited and paid homage, as the Tirupati Darshan gains total fruition only through the blessings from Goddess Padmavathi.

At Alamelu Mangapuram, you can witness important celebrations throughout the year. Some of them are famous Devi festivals while some are special occasions dedicated to the Purna of Alamelu Mangapuram temple.

During the Navarathri Festival (Dussehra), the Alamelu Mangapuram temple also takes part in the nationwide celebration of good over Evil.

At the Kartheeka month festival, the Lord presents precious gifts to his beloved. During this time the lord sends costly sari, blouse piece, holy tulsi, turmeric leaves and exquisite delicacies offering birthday presents to the Goddess Padmavathi atop a splendidly decorated Elephant. This is followed with a celebrated procession in an ivory palanquin for a holy bath in Padma Sarovar.

The Theppotsavam (boat festival) is an important celebration, which occurs in the five days during the month of Jyeshtha month (June month).

Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple and Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple are historically interconnected and conditional on each other. During the festival of Vasanthotsavam, we devotee's celebrate this with the procession atop the golden chariot during the 2nd day of the festival.

The festival of Sri Padmavathi Parinayam is held during Navami, Dasami and Ekadasi in the month of Vaisaka month. During the three-day festival, the majestically decorated idol of Sri Malayappa Swamy of Lord Venkateswara, arrives in grand style on the Gaja vahanam, Aswa vahanam and Garuda Vahanam on the three consecutive days.

 GURUDWARA AMB SAHIB

AT

MOHALI

Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali has immense historical and cultural significance and is thus a must visit for tourists. It is well known for being visited by Guru Har Rai, the seventh guru of the Sikhs. The name of the site is derived from Amb, meaning mangoes in Punjabi.

It is believed that Bhai Kooram from Kabul, travelled to Amritsar to meet Sri Guru Arjan Dev. He saw other followers give offerings to the guru; however, he was empty handed and felt ashamed of himself.

When the darbar ended, mangoes were distributed as prasad and a mango was also given to Bhai Kooram who did not consume it. The next day, he offered the same mango to the guru during darbar, but the guru asked Bhai Kooram to eat that mango and promised him that one day his offering will be accepted.

Guru Har Rai Ji, son of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, after some time, visited the shrine to keep his father’s promise. He saw Bhai Kooram meditating in the garden and asked him to fulfil his promise by giving a mango. Bhai Kooram politely replied that he couldn’t offer him any, as mangoes were not in season.

On hearing his reply, Guru Har Rai Ji performed a miracle and Bhai Kooram saw a tree that was full of ripe mangoes. On the orders of the guru, Bhai Kooram served mangoes to the guru, the entire sangat and the natives who had come to seek blessings.

The Gurdwara, since then, is popular for its mango tree, which bears fruit in every season. An annual fair is organised at the shrine every year in the month of January, when mangoes are distributed as prasad.

By Air

There is no airport in Mohali; however, the city can be easily reached via Chandigarh Airport that is located 15 km to its east.

By Rail

Since Mohali does not have a rail head of its own, tourists from across the country can take a train to the Chandigarh Railway Station.

By Road

From nearby regions like Delhi, Chandigarh and Ambala, road transportation is the best way to travel to Mohali. Other convenient options to reach Mohali via road are autos and taxis.
