Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya – It Has Something For Interesting To Every Visitor

with 1 comment

CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ VASTU SANGRAHALAYA

 AT

MUMBAI

If ever a window was required to peep into the fascinating world of art and antiquities, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, at Mumbai, would be the right place to visit.
The museum has a representative collection of various forms of art from the Indian subcontinent and also to a certain extent works of art from China, Japan and European countries. Additionally, it houses a study collection of natural history specimens.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is most famous for having acquired a huge collection of Indian miniatures and other important antiquities, more particularly, the Maratha textiles, arms and armour from the collection of Seth Purshottam Mavji.

This collection was once a part of the treasures of Nana Phadnavis, the most influential minister during the reign of the Peshwas. The importance of the museum has also been enhanced due to the donation of a fascinating art collection from the repository of Sir Ratan Tata and Sir Dorabji Tata.

Built from a winning entry by architect George Wittet in 1909, the museum offers insights into the rich past of the country with its archaeological artefacts sourced from various excavated sites. It was opened to public on January10, 1922.

This includes antiquities from the Buddhist monasteries of Gandhara, now in Pakistan, and the pottery and terracotta figurines from Harappa and Mohenjodaro dating back to about 3000 BCE.

The museum mainly houses sculptures from the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Kashmir. Some of the other galleries showcase miniature paintings, decorative objects made out of wood, jade and ivory, etc.

The museum is interesting because of the wide variety of objects that it houses. There is something of interest for everyone, as for example, a collection of Himalayan art that presents the complex, mystic and fascinating ‘tantric’ world of the Vajrayan Buddhist pantheon.

The gallery also has a rich collection of colourful ‘thankas’ - painted cloth hangings - from Nepal as well as Tibet. For those interested in paintings, there is a collection of the work of such masters as Bonifacio Veronese, Mattia Preti, William Strang, Jacob de Backer, Peter Paul Rubens and Sir Thomas Lawrence.

One of the most visited sections in the museum is the one that displays a thrilling collection of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Of special interest are the Diorama cases which show the birds and animals in their natural habitats.

The section is extremely interactive and a favourite among children and students. Curiosity also draws the tourists to see the ‘Anwar-i-Suhayli’ which is an Arabic version of the ‘Panchtantra’, the old Indian fable. This richly illustrated manuscript was commissioned by Emperor Akbar and is considered a landmark in the naturalistic and masterly studies of animals and birds. The folios present a whole world of animals and birds, illustrated as running and chasing, holding assemblies, etc.

The museum is located at a very central place in Mumbai and easily accessible by road and railway. The address is: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, 159-161, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort, Mumbai, Maharashtra – 400 023. Tel.: 022-22844484/ 22844519. Website – www.csmvs.in , Email: csmvsmumbai@gmail.com

Today this building is listed as a Grade I Heritage Building and has been awarded the '2010 UNESCO Asia – Pacific Heritage Award' for Cultural Heritage Conservation. It has been awarded first place for Heritage Building Maintenance by the Indian Heritage Society.

Mhaismal Hill Station - Natural Beauties Are Making The Most Excellent Tourist Attraction In Aurangabad

MHAISMAL HILL STATION

AT

AURANGABAD

Mhaismal, also known as Maheshmal, is a beautiful but small hill station in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. Located some 39 km to the north of Aurangabad City, this enchanting place is at a height of 1067 and is an important part of the famous Sahyadri Ranges. It is an offbeat tourist spot, that’s missed by most tourists because they are more focused on the more famous landmarks associated with Aurangabad.
Mhaismal is the kind of place where nature comes extremely close to mythology and creates an ambience that is unique and special in all respects. Most tourists head for this destination during the monsoon when the landscape turns a bright green.

Mhaismal is a part of the extreme eastern limits of the Sahyadari ranges with its unique mountain topography. The plateau of the hill-station is spread out evenly on protruding landforms in various directions.

The tarmac streaks the plateau in almost two equal halves and runs all throughout to the extreme dead-end north. About 37 kilometers from the urban centre of Aurangabad and 12 kilometers from the eternal town of Khuldabad is this temperate place of sheer indulgence - an engagement with nature. However, the real charm of this quaint little place is its monsoon mood.

Picturesque spaces, verdant valleys, serene atmosphere and sylvan surroundings are the intangible attributes that make Mhaismal one of the most visited hilly terrains of this part of Maharashtra. It’s no wonder then that it is colloquially known as the ‘Mahableshwar of Marathwada’.

Marathwada is the provincial division of Maharashtra comprising eight districts, with Aurangabad as its capital. Mhaismal is also a testimony to the remnants of an ancient temple dedicated to Shiva.

When it comes to landscape views of breathtaking proportions, Mhaismal should rank among the best in the state. The main view point overlooks a horizon of over 30 kilometers with neatly laid farms, hamlets and forest patches at regular intervals.

This is managed through the efforts of a joint forest management committee. The forest department of Maharashtra has had Mhaismal on its map as an ecotourism destination for long, and has put here on show their best model of the region.

As such, scenic sights all around make for a major tourist attraction of this hill-station. Do not miss, in particular, the ones near the gigantic TV tower, offering you a panoramic view of a sub-plateau level dotted with intermittent lakes and ponds.
