TSOMGO LAKE

AT

GANGTOK

Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake is a glacial lake in Sikkim and located at an altitude of 12,310 feet. The name Tsomgo means 'Source of water'. It's located 35kms from Gangtok town and on the steep route known as Jawaharlal Nehru Road which leads all the way to Nathula Pass.

This is one of the few and awesome high altitude lakes in India. The lake becomes doubly attractive with the reflections of the surrounding hills on the water.

From Gangtok which is at 5410 ft, the altitude rises to about 10,000 ft in just 15kms. You can imagine how steep the gradient would be in this stretch of the road.

It takes about 2 hours by car from Gangtok to reach the lake. The lake is filled with water of melting snow coming from the surrounding mountains. It's a one kilometer long oval shaped lake.

The average depth is about 50-feet. During summer and autumn, you will find Primula flowers and other Alpine vegetation around the lake. And during winter the lake becomes frozen and a snowfield.

You can not litter the lake. Installation of prayer wheels and a small temple of Lord Shiva by the lakeside denotes that the lake is considered sacred by the locals. Tsomgo lake is a stop over place for many different migratory ducks like the Brahmini ducks.

You should spend some time here and soak in the serene beauty of the lake and its surroundings. In the earlier days the lamas used to study the color of water in the lake and forecast the future. A darker color would indicate that the coming year in the state may be troublesome.

There is a pathway along the lake that leads to a resting place - about half a kilometer walk. Only about 200 meters away from the lake there are lots of stalls & shops selling tea, coffee and snacks.

You will get hot Tibetan noodle soup to combat the cold. Stalls rent out snow boots, jackets, gum boots etc. There are pay & use toilets inside the complex as well. However there is no lodging accommodation in this area to stay overnight.

You can take a ride on colorfully adorned yaks and ponies. One more terrific activity is being planned at Tsomgo. Foundation stone of a 957-meter ropeway (cable car) has already been laid here in 2010. Once implemented, the cable cars will carry passengers from the lake to a hilltop nearby.

You should reach Tsomgo lake before noon because in the afternoon the weather here usually turns inclement. In fact best is to start from Gangtok by 7:30 to 8am and reach here by 10am so that you get clear 2 hours to enjoy.
In the winter however the route sometimes get closed due to heavy snowing.

Photography is now permitted and foreigners are also allowed to visit the lake. However since this is a restricted area, you are required to take a permit (you need photo identity proof and two passport size photos).

You can get the permit from the Sikkim Tourist Information Center at MG Marg Gangtok, or ask the hotel or a travel agent to arrange for it.

From April to July, you can witness a good bloom of flowers. Most of the year, Changu Lake experiences a sparkling weather

On the first day, officials from SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries, which include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, would attend the conference.

There is a huge scope to organise Food Festival and Handicraft Festival in the city, apart from Golf Tourism. A proposal to set up Buddhist Centre on MTDC’s 900 acres land at Ellora is under consideration.”
The announcement of providing financial assistance upto Rs 50 lakh to the desirous persons in the tourism business set up under Start Up scheme was also made.

Mentioning the need for hosting film shootings at Ellora, Ajanta and other important places in Aurangabad, Smt. Valsa Nair Singh commented “The countries like Switzerland and Spain witnessed a boom in tourism due to film shootings.
A beeline was formed to see the tomb of Mastani due to Bajirao Mastani film. The shooting of one big budget film featuring big stars like Shah Rukh Khan in Aurangabad will give a major boost to the tourism sector.”

KAILASA TEMPLE

AT

ELLORA

The Kailasa temple, one of major tourist attraction in India located in Ellora, Marathwada region of Maharashtra, India is one of the largest rock-cut ancient Hindu temple.

The temple is one of the 34 temples and monasteries known collectively as the Ellora Caves built in the 8th century by the Rashtrakuta King Krishna I as
attested in Kannada inscriptions.

The Kailasa’s (cave 16) Striking proportion, elaborate workmanship, architectural content, and sculpture ornamentation of rock-cut architecture made under Dravidian architecture, which is a remarkable example.
The temple covers the wide area of 2 kms and were dug side by side in the wall of high basalt cliff in the complex located at Ellora. It took a long time to complete the temple.

Accurate time and year was unknown but it is said that it was commissioned and completed between 757-783 CE, when Krishna I ruled the Rashtrakuta dynasty. The temple is made of a large stone that forms a prehistoric monument with unique sculpture, inscription on it and designed to recall Mount Kailash, the home of Lord Shiva.

Kailasa Temple, the most impressive of all the temples of Ellora and one of the wonders of India. During the 8th and early 9th centuries, the greatest masters of rock sculpture produced this cave which is known as the Kailasa, the mountain dwelling place of Shiva.

It is probably the world’s biggest monolithic structure, carved out of a single rock and its conception is simply breathtaking.

Starting at the top of a cliff, a horde of stone-cutters removed three million cubic feet of rock to form a vast pit measuring 107 feet deep, 276 feet long and 154 feet wide, leaving a block in the center which was to become a temple rising from the foot of what had been a hill.

But, despite its colossal proportions, this is all sculptured and its detail is worked as intricately as if it had been an ivory miniature.

This replica of the home of Shiva stands in an open country yard as three separate structures. The main temple rests on a base 25 feet high which appears to be supported by friezes of elephants.

This temple measures 150 by 100 feet under a gabled front and a tower in three tiers beneath a cupola. An over head bridge links the three buildings of Kailasa and its outer gateway.

First stop is North Bay with crystal clear waters ideal for snorkelling, sea walking or just lazing on the pebbly beach with soft, cool winds blowing. Then head to Ross Island and wander around the erstwhile capital of the British in the Andaman islands, which bears the distinct stamp of colonialism. Scattered all over the island are dilapidated buildings-government offices, church, hospital, bakery, press, even a ball room and swimming pool now in ruins and run over by thick roots and trees bring to mind the visions of Angkor temples. End with Viper Island, named after the vessel which brought the first Britishers.

Head out early for the long drive to Baratang Island in the north. Travelling through the South Andaman to Baratang is a bit like stepping into Joseph Conrad's darkly mysterious Heart of Darkness. Thick, dark forests and scattered rustic habitations line the roads and visitors can occasionally get a glimpse of the Jarawas, the indigenous tribals with their distinctive Negroid features. To add to Baratang's mystique, a long boat ride past dense mangroves and a narrow path leads to ancient limestone caves, while another part of the island contains the only known mud volcanoes in India.
