GURUDWARA BANGLA SAHIB
AT
NEW DELHI
Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is situated in the
heart of New Delhi's Cannaught Place area.
It is loacted on the east side intersection of Ashok Road and Baba Kharag Singh
Marg.
Originally this place was the
Bungalow(haveli) of Mirza Raja Jai Singh, hence the name Bangla Sahib. It's
original name was Jaisinghpura Palace. Mirza Raja Jai Singh was an important
military leader of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
This
handsome white-marble gurdwara was constructed at the site where the eighth
Sikh guru, Harkrishan Dev, stayed before his death in 1664.
Despite his tender years, the six-year-old
guru tended to victims of Delhi’s cholera and smallpox epidemic, and the waters
of the gurdwara tank are said to have healing powers.
Sikh pilgrims flock here at all hours, and
devotional songs waft over the compound, adding to the contemplative mood.
A
small tank was built by Raja Jai Singh in the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. This water
is taken to cure ailments. The Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee has
established a hospital in the basement of the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib.
The
Khalsa Girls School is there in the adjacent building. A pond of 225 x 235 feet
has been built solely with donations from the devotees.
The Art Gallery present in the basement of the
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is worth seeing. They exhibit the paintings depicting
historical events related with the Sikh history. The gallery is named after the
Sikh General Sardar Bhagel Singh.
The
