At a point of time Gwalior fort was regarded
as North and Central India's most invincible fortress. The fort was built by
Raja Man Singh Tomar in the 15th century. The fort of Gwalior has seen many ups
and downs of history.
In
the course of almost five hundred years, the Gwalior fort went from one ruler
to another.
Throughout
history the fort has transferred hands from the Tomars to Mughals to Marathas
and then to the British and finally coming under the ownership of Scindias.
The fort is very impressive with its structure
and a preview of its royalty can be seen through the very gates that you will
enter the fort from. There are six gates that gives you access to the Fort and
out of which the Hathi Pul and Badalgarh gates are worth your time here.
The whole fort consists of the main fort and
the two palaces; Gurjari and Man Mandir Palace. While the main fort saw
its existence from the early days, the Gurjari and Man Mandir was added later
to the whole fort by Man Singh Tomar
the
Gwalior Fort encloses three temples, 6 palaces and several water tanks.
Easily
the most beautiful place in the Fort is the Man Mandir Palace. It is an
amazingly elaborate structure that seems to hang on at the edge of the fort.
Blue ceramic tiles form the façade of this
palace.
It is also host of the spectacular sound and light show which is held
there every evening. It is so well executed that you will feel as if you’re a
part of the rich history of the fort and the love story of Raja Man Singh and
