MANGALADEVI TEMPLE

AT

MANGALORE

Sri Mangaladevi Temple is a Hindu temple in the city of Mangalore District of Karnataka State of India. The temple is at Bolara which is about three kilometers from the City Centre. The temple is dedicated to the god Shakti who is in the form of Mangaladevi. This is where the name of the city, Mangalore, comes from. This temple has high significance among the locals and was built in the ninth century.

The history of the temple dates back to the tenth century when two sages came to visit Mangalore from Nepal. The sages were named Machhendranatha and Gorakanatha. Hearing about the arrival of the two sages, the ruling king came to meet them. He offered all help and patronage and paid his respects to them.

Delighted by the humility of the King, the sages asked him for a piece of land to build a temple. The King came to know about the temple built by Parshurama which was the Temple of Mangaladevi. The sages then took the King to all the places which had historical importance and asked him to dig the place and build a temple.

The King did as he was asked to and a grand shrine of the goddess stood at the holy place. Since then, the temple attained special significance and has become a part of the history of the city of Mangalore.

The temple has an architecture which reflects the style of Kerala and has most of the structure made from wood. The Hindu god, Mangaladevi is in a seated posture inside the temple. A rectangular wall around the temple encloses all the shrines located inside the temple boundary. The central shrine has the image of the deity which can be reached through five steps.

The temple has a two-storied tower and special pujas are performed during the Navaratri festival. Special pujas are performed on all the nine days of the festival. A large number of devotees gather at the temple of the day of Dasara which is the tenth and the last day of Navaratri festival.

On the day of Dasara, the decorated goddess is mounted on a chariot and the grand procession moves to Marnamikatte, where the god Mangaladevi and Shamivriksha are worshipped. The devotees believe that the worship of the goddess brings them prosperity and happiness. The Vedic Brahmins perform various pujas and rituals on a regular basis.

The temple has a rich heritage, Keralian style architecture and a historical significance. The temple has easy access through buses and autos. Travelling to the ancient city of Mangalore will not be complete without a visit to this temple.

Toy Train Joyride -

 Darjeeling to Ghum & Back

Toy train joy rides operate from Darjeeling Railway Station. It's a 2-hour round trip from Darjeeling up to Ghum and back covering a total distance of 14kms. There are four such round trips in a day, two in the morning half and two in the afternoon. The train stops for 10 minutes at the Batasia Loop. At Batasia the train makes a loop around a wonderful manicured garden. The view of Darjeeling town and the snow peaks of Kanchenjunga from here are unparalleled. The War Memorial built in honor of the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives is located at the center of the Garden.

Ghum is the highest altitude station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Rail track. Altitude of Ghum is 2225.7 meters (7407 ft). Here the toy train stops for 30 minutes for a visit to Darjeeling Himalayan Railway museum. The DHR Museum is located at the station premises. The highlight here is the oldest toy train engine - The Baby Sivok. The entree fee to the museum is included in the ticket price. DHR sends by post a certificate validating your ride on the toy train so that you can cherish the memories of your ride.

Toy Train Joyride Schedule
Train No.: 52546, Departs: 8am, Returns: 10am, Diesel Engine
Train No.: 52548, Departs: 10:40am, Returns: 12:40pm, Steam Engine
Train No.: 52549, Departs: 13:20pm, Returns: 15:20pm, Steam Engine
Train No.: 52547, Departs: 16:05pm, Returns: 18:05pm, Steam Engine

Update September 2016: Effective 10th September 2016, 3 additional steam engine hauled toy trains are being introduced for joy rides (mostly targeting the high season of Puja). The timings are 8:00 (diesel), 10:30 (steam), 10:40 (steam), 11:00 (diesel), 13:10 (steam), 13:20 (steam), 13:30 (diesel), 16:05 (steam), 16:10 (steam).

There are usually two first class coaches provided in a steam engine train, while three first class coaches in diesel engine joyride toy train.

TIP: Note that during high season, there is a lot of rush for this ride and you should try to book well in advance. Don't plan to buy the joyride tickets after you reach Darjeeling because you may not get them. Just in case you don't get the joyride tickets, an alternative plan is to buy a ticket on the regular morning toy train operating between Darjeeling and Kurseong, which too goes via Batasia and Ghum. Get off at Ghum and take a shared jeep back to Darjeeling... almost similar experience as the joy ride. However this is a diesel engine hauled train and not steam engine. You can buy tickets online through Indian railway site irctc.co.in.

Toy Train Joyride Fare (Updated September 2016: Fares effective 18th February, 2015)
Diesel Engine Rides: Rs. 630/-. All first class seats.
Steam Engine Rides: Rs. 1,415/-. All first class seats.

NOTE:
1) Above are round trip fares Darjeeling-Ghum-Darjeeling.
2) No concession in Darjeeling Toy Train Joy Rides to Children of age 5 or above, neither to senior citizens. No tickets required for children below 5 years.

3) The first train in the morning at 8am is the diesel engine hauled train while the rest are steam engine trains. The fares of Steam Engine puled trains are higher because they represent the original heritage trains and their maintenance cost is also higher. Fares include admission to the DHR Ghum Museum.

Ajanta Caves – Monks Of Buddhist Are Spending An Amount Of Winter Times In This Caves

AJANTA CAVES

AT

AURANGABAD

Ajanta caves  are located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India. The Ajanta caves are one of the places history and and culture enthusiasts will enjoy an excursion to. It is believed that several Buddhist monks spent a significant amount of time at the Ajanta caves during the monsoons as they were forbidden from travelling during that particular period of the year. This was the time when the monks put their creativity and time to use and painted the walls of the caves.

It was only in 1819, when Jon Smith, who belonged to the 28th Cavalry accidentally chanced upon the horse-shoe shaped rock while hunting a tiger in and around the Deccan Plateau region. The entrance to the cave like structures intrigued the British official enough to make them cross the Waghora River in the vicinity and reach the caves. Soon, archaeological experts excavated the sites and the news of discovery of these caves spread like wild fire making it an instant hit among European travelers.

Apart from the stunning paintings and sculptures, there were also huge Buddhist mounds like stupas built, massive pillars intricately detailed carvings on the ceilings and walls made big news, giving the Ajanta caves the status of a heritage site.

It was soon studied that there were over 30 caves in the cave complex out of which one part of the complex was developed during the Satvahana period and the other was done during the Vakataka period. After closely studying several of these artefacts, historians and archaeologists speculated a connection between the Vakataka dynasty that ruled the region to the Gupta dynasty of north India!

During the first phase of construction, the sanctuaries known as the Chaitya-grihas were built in the canyons of the Waghora River. Caves 9, 10, 12 and 15 A were built in the first phase during the Satavahana dynasty. The second period of construction was carried out during the rule of Emperor Harishena of the Vakataka dynasty. Close to 20 cave temples were simultaneously built which resemble the modern day monasteries with a sanctum in the rear end of the structure.

Towards the end of the reign of Harisena, these caves were abandoned and eventually forgotten through the centuries. The dense forests were partly to be blamed for camouflaging these caves. The Ajanta caves are home to paintings and sculptures that depict heavy influence of Buddhist philosophy and religious teachings of the Buddha. Various incidents from the life of Gautam Buddha and the Jataka Tales are represented and recreated on the walls of these caves. Scenes from the royal court of the respective eras are also painted.

Through his life, Buddha was against the idea of sculpting and painting images of him. He  preached that life was a process through which one must overcome desire in order to attain salvation or nirvana. However, after Buddha’s death, his followers who wanted to worship him, decided to paint his images so that they had something to hold on to while spreading the faith and teachings of the Buddha.

At the entrance of the first of Ajanta caves, you will be greeted by a tall image of the Buddha. The doorway to the cave is decorated with auspicious motifs and the cave has numerous sculptures and paintings of Bodhisattvas Padmapani and Vajrapani; carvings of princesses, lovers, maids and dancing girls; scenes depicting the Persian Embassy, Golden Geese, Pink Elephants and Bull Fights. Though the caves are over 2,000 years old, the Buddha statues had been added close 600 years later.

Daulatabad fort – It Is One Of The World’s Most Excellent Conserved Fort

DAULATABAD FORT

AT

AURANGABAD

Daulatabad Fort is 14 kilometer away from Aurangabad City of Maharastra State of India. It is magnificent 12th century fortress stands on a hill, Built by Raja Bhillamraj once known as 'Devgiri', Initially a Yadav stronghold, it passed through the hands of several dynasties in the Deccan. The ‘Daulatabad’ (city of fortune) name was give by Muhamad Tughlaq, Sultan of Delhi.

When Muhammad Tughlak ascended the Delhi throne, he was so taken by the fortress that he decided to move his court and capital there, renaming it Daulatabad, "the City of Fortune". He ordered the entire population of Delhi to move out en masse to the new capital.

Daulatabad Fort, a rock-hewn fortress dominating the landscape, from a 600 feet high mesa-like flat terrain, Daulatabad Fort is one of the world's best preserved Fort, survived without being altered. Daulatabad Fort is said to be only occupied by cheating. A series of secret, puzzled, endless passages lounge curved like a python amidst the fort.

Here blazing torches were push upon enemies. Or hot oil poured down his path, as he deliberated in the maze. The Fort itself lies in the body of an isolated hill; the steep hill - sides at the base falling so sharply to the moat that no aggressive troops could scale the height. The moat, 40 feet deep with mechanical drawbridges full with crocodiles.

The defenses were extended during Muhammad Tughlak, battlements and fortresses were built, mounted with huge bronze cannons, and several rings of walls with battlements guarded the approach. Several inner walls with heavy iron gates fitted with elephant spikes were encircled by a six kilometer outer wall.

Inside these walls is a 40 feet deep moat, with a drawbridge, leading to the original citadel. The plateau's solid rock sides were then scraped vertically flat to a height of 250 ft., for extra added unease of access.

A 5 kilometer strong wall, artificial scarping and a complicated series of defenses made Daulatabad Fort secure. The 30 meter high Chand Minar (Tower) built much later with 3 circular balconies had a defensive and religious role in the Fortress.

This circular tower with three balconies has similar features to Qutub Minar in Delhi. The lowest part of the minar is a square construction with arch-shaped openings, and 'mehrab' like niches inside. It may have functioned as a small mosque. In one corner of the construction, there is a Persian inscription. The base of the Chand Minar was built in the Tugluq period, whereas the central part is assumed to have been built by Ala ad-Din Hasan in 1346, to celebrate the conquer of Daulatabad Fort.

A Day Trip From Delhi To Utmost Beauty Cities

Greatest cities for a day trip from Delhi

After you've stood in awe of Delhi's towering Lotus Temple and explored The Garden of Five Senses, consider taking a day trip or weekend getaway to some nearby cities that have a lot of charm and other wonderful sights. Here are some of the best:

Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Of course, the top thing to see in Agra is the Taj Mahal, arguably the most famous temple in the world and a testament to eternal love. This gigantic marble mausoleum was built in the late 1600s by the Mughal Emperor in memory of his late wife. Aside from this world wonder, make sure to see the Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Red Fort of Agra has stunning motifs, colonnaded buildings and dozens of fairy-like castles. Fatehpur Sikri is a city from the late 1500s the served as the seat of the Mughal Empire. You can walk around and see its distinct architecture before heading to a nearby market for tasty street food.

Mathura

Mathura is a two-hour drive from Delhi, but it's worth a visit. This city of 2.5 million people - small by Indian standards - was an ancient industry hub, and you can check out some of the exquisite ancient architecture that survives today. Visit the Kesava Deo Temple, which hosts a small bare room - a sacred space - where followers of Hindi believe Lord Krishna was born more than 3,500 years ago. Other must-sees are the Archeological Museum, which boasts an awesome collection of Mathura School religious sculptures, which were popular during the 3rd century BC through the 12th century AD, and the Gita Temple, which stakes its claim to fame on the red pillar with the entire Bhagavad Gita written on it.

Chandigarh

Chandigarh is about a four-hour drive north of Delhi, so it would make a good spot for a weekend getaway. Plus, there's so much to do in and around this city that you'll want to stay for more than one day. With a population of just around one million people, Chandigarh is on the smaller side for an Indian city. Don't miss out on seeing the Nek Chand Fantasy Rock Garden, a gorgeous 25-acre garden with whimsical figures made of shards of China, winding walkways, flowing waterfalls and something surprising at ever turn. This fantastical garden was created by Nek Chand and everything in it that is not organic is made from recycled products. Other things to see are the Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh Rose Garden and Government Museum and Art Gallery.

SRI PADMAVATHI AMMAVARI TEMPLE

AT

TIRUPATI

This temple is about 5 kilometres from the town of Tirupati. Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple is dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi, who was the consort of Lord Venketswara.

The temple was constructed during the reign of King Thondaman Chakravarthy. It is claimed that worshippers used to first visit this temple and pay homage to Goddess Padmavathi before going to the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati.

Padmavathi was the daughter of Akasha Raja of Thondamandalam. It is believed that after performing oblation to the Gods, he found a baby girl resting on a lotus and named her Padmavathi.

This girl went on to marry Lord Venkateswara. Goddess Padmavathi also is known as Alamelu Manga, which means an inexhaustible source of compassion and love. This temple is also manifested in the significance of femininity in the Hindu tradition.

It is also a shrine of love between the Lord Mahavishu and Goddess Lakshmi. The temple city of Tirupati, is known for its many temples and compelling architecture. But among these the Sri Tiruchanoor Alamelu Mangapuram temple needs to be compulsorily visited and paid homage, as the Tirupati Darshan gains total fruition only through the blessings from Goddess Padmavathi.

At Alamelu Mangapuram, you can witness important celebrations throughout the year. Some of them are famous Devi festivals while some are special occasions dedicated to the Purna of Alamelu Mangapuram temple.

During the Navarathri Festival (Dussehra), the Alamelu Mangapuram temple also takes part in the nationwide celebration of good over Evil.

At the Kartheeka month festival, the Lord presents precious gifts to his beloved. During this time the lord sends costly sari, blouse piece, holy tulsi, turmeric leaves and exquisite delicacies offering birthday presents to the Goddess Padmavathi atop a splendidly decorated Elephant. This is followed with a celebrated procession in an ivory palanquin for a holy bath in Padma Sarovar.

The Theppotsavam (boat festival) is an important celebration, which occurs in the five days during the month of Jyeshtha month (June month).

Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple and Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple are historically interconnected and conditional on each other. During the festival of Vasanthotsavam, we devotee's celebrate this with the procession atop the golden chariot during the 2nd day of the festival.

The festival of Sri Padmavathi Parinayam is held during Navami, Dasami and Ekadasi in the month of Vaisaka month. During the three-day festival, the majestically decorated idol of Sri Malayappa Swamy of Lord Venkateswara, arrives in grand style on the Gaja vahanam, Aswa vahanam and Garuda Vahanam on the three consecutive days.

Gurudwara Amb Sahib - A Mango Tree Generate Mangoes During The Full Year At This Place

 GURUDWARA AMB SAHIB

AT

MOHALI

Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali has immense historical and cultural significance and is thus a must visit for tourists. It is well known for being visited by Guru Har Rai, the seventh guru of the Sikhs. The name of the site is derived from Amb, meaning mangoes in Punjabi.

It is believed that Bhai Kooram from Kabul, travelled to Amritsar to meet Sri Guru Arjan Dev. He saw other followers give offerings to the guru; however, he was empty handed and felt ashamed of himself.

When the darbar ended, mangoes were distributed as prasad and a mango was also given to Bhai Kooram who did not consume it. The next day, he offered the same mango to the guru during darbar, but the guru asked Bhai Kooram to eat that mango and promised him that one day his offering will be accepted.

Guru Har Rai Ji, son of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, after some time, visited the shrine to keep his father’s promise. He saw Bhai Kooram meditating in the garden and asked him to fulfil his promise by giving a mango. Bhai Kooram politely replied that he couldn’t offer him any, as mangoes were not in season.

On hearing his reply, Guru Har Rai Ji performed a miracle and Bhai Kooram saw a tree that was full of ripe mangoes. On the orders of the guru, Bhai Kooram served mangoes to the guru, the entire sangat and the natives who had come to seek blessings.

The Gurdwara, since then, is popular for its mango tree, which bears fruit in every season. An annual fair is organised at the shrine every year in the month of January, when mangoes are distributed as prasad.

By Air

There is no airport in Mohali; however, the city can be easily reached via Chandigarh Airport that is located 15 km to its east.

By Rail

Since Mohali does not have a rail head of its own, tourists from across the country can take a train to the Chandigarh Railway Station.

By Road

From nearby regions like Delhi, Chandigarh and Ambala, road transportation is the best way to travel to Mohali. Other convenient options to reach Mohali via road are autos and taxis.
