One of the oldest forts in India, the Pura Qila was constructed by the Afghan King, Sher Shah Suri on what was supposed to be Indraprastha, the capital of the Pandavas. The walls of the Old Fort rise to a height of 18 metres and are spread over 1.5 kilometres.

The fort has three main entrances, the Bada Darwaza which faces west and is used as the entrance to the fort even today. The South Gate is known as the Humayun Gate and the third gate is called the Talaqi Gate or the forbidden gate.

One does not have to go far to see the old fort or Purana Quila standing stoically amidst wild greenery.Built on the site of the most ancient of the numerous cities of Delhi, Indraprastha, Purana Quila is roughly rectangular in shape having a circuit of nearly two kilometers.

The thick ramparts crowned by merlons have three gateways provided with bastions on either side. It was surrounded by a wide moat, connected to river Yamuna, which used to flow on the east of the fort. The northern gate way, called the Talaqui darwaza or the forbidden gateway, combines the typically Islamic pointed arch with Hindu Chhatris and brackets; whereas the southern gateway called the Purana Quila

Humayun Darwaza also had a similar plan.

The massive gateway and walls of Purana Quila were built by Humayun and the foundation laid for the new capital, Dinpanah.

The work was carried forward by Sher Shah Suri,who displaced Humayun, Purana Quila is the venue for the spectacular sound and light show held every evening.

Twin Beaches Occupy A Significant Place In The History Of The Maharastra State

A wide range of beautiful and serene beaches is what makes the twin villages of Harnai and Murud in the Dapoli taluka of Ratnagiri district such a big favourite of tourists all year round. Also, not only have they been blessed with natural attractions but they also occupy a significant place in the history of the state.

The white silky seashore at Harnai-Murud is adorned with a chain of sea forts such as Suvarnadurg, Kanakdurg and Goa. Murud is also famous for being the birthplace of two prominent personalities who have been awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Located 225 kilometers from Mumbai with the nearest railway station at Khed on the Konkan line and the closest airport at Mumbai, Harnai is an ancient port on the west coast of India. Though the village is very small, a visit to the sea fort Suvarnadurg makes for an amazing experience.

One can also travel from here to a village called Anjarle by crossing the Paaj Creek to visit the temple of Kadyavarcha Ganapati. The forts of Kanakdurg and Goa are situated on the shore of the Arabian Sea at Harnai. Murud, with Durga Devi as its local deity, is located just 14 kilometers from Dapoli, the taluka place.

This village too has a historical background apart of course from being on the map of pilgrims for its beautifully designed temple dedicated to Durga Devi.The temple has intricately carved eight wooden pillars and decorative slabs. A six-layered ‘deepmaala’ stands tall in front of the temple. A smaller temple of Svayambhuva Devi is located in the courtyard of this main temple.

A big bell hangs outside the main hall, this being a souvenir which Maratha warrior Chimaji Appa brought here to celebrate his victory over Vasai. Vasudev Joshi Murudkar was then the ‘subhedar’ of Vasai during the reign of Bajirao Peshwa I and is believed to have been instrumental in adorning the temple with this bell.

Murud is a tiny village with thick foliage of trees on its coastline. A unique feature of this village is that it has offered two well-known personalities in the service of the nation – social reformer Annasaheb alias Dhondo Keshav Karve and Sanskrit laureate Pandurang Vasudev Kane.

They both were honoured with the supreme civil award Bharat Ratna. The official residence of Annasaheb Karve is no longer in existence but a bust honouring him has been erected in the square near the temple. The school in which both these personalities finished their studies has completed its centenary and is a matter of pride for Murud.

Dakshinaarka Temple - It Is Different From The Other Temples On The Root Of Its Majesty.

Dakshinaarka Temple is located in Gaya district of Bihar State of India. Dakshinaarka Temple or Sun Temple in Gaya is an ancient shrine, which is also mentioned in the Hindu religious book Vaayu Purana. The temple is of supreme significance for all those visiting Gaya for pind daan (a religious ritual performed for the peace of the departed souls).

Devotees make offerings to their deceased ancestors near the Surya Kunda or Dakshina Maanas tank built right in front of Sun Temple. Located close to the Vishnupad Temple, this shrine has simple architecture with a dome-shaped top.Offerings to the ancestors are made at the Surya Kunda or the Dakshina Maanas tank in front of the temple. Sun worship apparently was very popular in the Magadha region which included Gaya.

Numerous old images of the Sun God Aditya are found in the Gaya region and there are still quite a number of sun worshippers in Gaya. It is said that they may have descended from the fire worshippers of Central Asia.

In fact, the granite image of Aditya (this particular image here is also referred to as Dakshinaarka) or the Sun God worshipped here is portrayed as wearing a jacket, a waist girdle and high boots in the Iranian tradition. Hundreds of people visit this temple on Sundays.

Sun worship in the Magadha region that encompassed Gaya has been mentioned in the Puranas and thus this temple is said to be of very ancient origin. The current structure dates back to the 13^th century, where the South Indian emperor Prataparudra of Warangal in Andhra Pradesh is said to have built it.

The Sun Temple at Gaya faces east and is located close to the famous Vishnupaada temple where a footprint of Vishnu is said to be enshrined. To the east of the temple is the tank Surya Kunda. The temple is a simple and plain one, with a dome over it. The comparatively larger sabha mandapa stands in front of the sanctum. Massive pillars line the mandapa where there are graceful stone sculptures of Shiva, Bhramaa, Vishnu, Surya and Durga.

The temple is surrounded by many other Jain and Buddhist temples and also two other Surya temples are in Gaya. The temple remains can be visited any time during the year and is open throughout the day. The most important day for worship is a Sunday and hundreds of pilgrims flock to worship the sun God on this auspicious day.  It is different from the other temples on the basis of  its splendor.

An architectural marvel in wood and stone, the Vadakkumnathan Temple, one of the oldest in the state, stands tall right at the heart of Thrissur, in a nine-acre walled patch of green. This centuries-old temple which is a classic example of Kerala's rich cultural heritage has sent flutters in the international circuit by clinching the ‘Award of Excellence’ last year at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation for taking great strides in protecting its legacy in architecture. And now it stands tall, restored to its old glory.

It was no easy feat for the team of archaeologists, craftsmen and others who toiled to restore the temple to its original state, an effort that spanned more than 10 years. The work was carried out under the guidance and control of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Every effort was taken to keep the original structure intact and renovate in the traditional way.

Restoration of the stunning centuries-old murals, intricately carved wooden sculptures, and exquisite wood work were done keeping in line with rituals and using only organic matter. The restoration process used the same methods and techniques that were used for the original construction.

A walk through the serene surrounds of the temple will treat you to a heady mix of architectural beauty, heritage, culture and history. The temple is also renowned across the world for its Pooram Festival. Lakhs of devotees and tourists gather every year to witness the famous "Thrissur Pooram" at the temple premises where ceremoniously decorated elephants are paraded amidst much fanfare and which also involves a spectacular display of fireworks.

It is that time of the year again to soak yourself in a rich colourful spectacle. The Sree Viswanatha Swamy Temple at Kalpathi in Palakkad is getting decked up to celebrate its annual chariot festival- the Kalpathi Ratholsavam.

One of the remarkable events in Kerala, this festival sees devotees and visitors arriving in droves to Kalpathi to join in the festive splendour. Kalpathi is a traditional Tamil Brahmin settlement in Kerala and the temple dedicated to Lord Viswanatha or Shiva is believed to be 700 years old. The annual chariot festival usually falls in the month of November. Vedic recitals and cultural programmes render a unique ambience to the place.

Three huge, magnificently decorated temple chariots are taken out through the streets of Kalpathi village on the third day. This marks the end of the festival.

The first day witnesses the pulling of one chariot followed by two chariots on the second, and three on the last day of the festival.

Kolli hills – A Complete Relaxation Place From The Contamination City Life

Kolli Hills are located in the Namakkal District of the state of Tamil Nadu. The destination is also referred to as Kolli Malai, which means the 'Mountains of Death'. 

These hills are over 1000 to 1300 metres in height, which cover more than 280 sq. km. There are around 70 hairpin bends that take tourists to the top of the hill. Moreover, the hills are part of the discontinuous Eastern Ghats. 

The Kolli hills are featured in several works of classical Tamil literature such as Silappathikaram, Manimekalai, Purananuru and Ainkurnuru. The region was ruled by Valvil Ori around 200 A.D., who is praised as one of the seven great philanthropists of ancient Tamil Nadu.

The hills are also known for many fatal diseases such as malaria, which has led to them being called "Kolli Malli", the "Mountains of Death".

Kolli Hills is a major mountain range and is an outline of the Eastern Ghats. It is eighteen miles (28 Kilometers) long (north south) twelve miles (19 Kilometers) wide (east/west) and the Kolli Block covers 441.4 square kilo meters. It falls within the following coordinates: - Rest Longitude 78º 17'05" to 78º 27'45" and North Latitude 11º 55' 05" to 11º 21'10".

The name Kolli Malai refers to the mountain's once hostile nature; the unsuspecting and unaccamatised aliens, attracted by natural beauty. Viewed from plains of Namakkal the mountain appears as a flat-topped mass. The mountain has been inhabitated from prehistoric times. It is much celebrated in the Tamil Literature of the Sangam period; at least eleven poets mention it in their poems.

It is also believed that Chanakya, the author of Arthashastra was born in this area before he had migrated to the North India to pursue education at Takshashila.

The destination can be visited any time of the year, except for the monsoon season when there is a danger of landslide due to heavy rainfall. 

Cultivation of Jack Fruit, Guvava, Hill Banana, Pineapple, Pepper, Coffee, Cardamom, topioca, honey and rice are the main agricultural activities.

For the convenience of the tourists the Panchayat Union has constructed six cottages at Semmedu. At near Arapaleeswarar Temple a Youth Hostel is also available which could accommodate up to 30 persons. This could also be used as a training center. An excellent lawn and a rose garden greet the visitors. 

The inmates can avail the tasty Kolli hills food supplied from the canteen run by the Women Self Help Group. All these accommodations are available for rent from the Commissioner, Kollimalai Panchayat Union, and Semmedu (Phone No. 04286 247425). Apart from these at present two private lodges with boarding facilities are available.

The nearest airport situated at Trichy, which is around 90 km from Kolli Hills. Prepaid taxis are available from this airport to reach the destination.

Salem Railway Station is the nearest railhead.

Direct buses are available from the outside of the railway station for Kolli Hills.
