One of the sacred shrines in Tamil Nadu is Arulmigu Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore, in Chennai City.It is a Siva Temple, and the name of the Lord is Arulmigu Kapaleeswarar.The name of the Goddess is Arulmigu Karpagambal.

Kapaleeshwarar temple was built in 7th century CE by the Pallavas. The original Kapaleeshwarar Temple was built where Santhome Church is located currently in Chennai. This original temple was demolished by the Portuguese and the present temple was built in the 16th century by the Vijayanagar Kings.

It is a loverly temple with a Stately Spire or ‘Gopuram’ as it is called. There is a big tank on its West. The temple and the tank are surrounded by Broad streets on the four sides. The view of the temple and the tank is picturesque. Mylapore is on the sea coast and the shore is away by half a mile of thickly populated residential area.

The name Mylapore is derived from the legend that the Goddess Uma worshipped Siva in the form of a peacock (or mayil in Tamil). We can see a representation of this legend on stone in a small Shrine under a Punnai tree (Sthala Vriksha) in the Courtyard of the temple.

There are six daily Puja Services. Kala Santhi (morning) Uchchikala (Mid-day) Sayamkala (Evening) and Ardhajama (late Night).10 day Panguni Peruvizha in March-April including celebrations for 63 Saivite saints drawing a huge crowd of devotees. The devotee crowd in the temple is usually huge on New Moon and Full Moon days and Pradosha days. Some Shiva related festivals are observed in the temple each month.

Every day nearly 150 persons will be served meals at this temple by noon. One day annadhanam will be Provided for Rs.2000. “It has been planned to construct a annadana koodam near the temple to make the devotees feel comfortable. The koodam will house the kitchen and the serving area,” say officials of HR & CE.

The Mamallapuram Dance Festival is held every year during Dec-Jan in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu. This dance festival is organised by Department of Tourism, Govt. of Tamilnadu. Mamallapuram was once the ancient port of the Pallavas. Mamallapuram is the renowned and ancient 7th century centre for Pallava culture and art. Adhiparasakthi Siddar Peedam – Adhiparasakthi Has Incarnated Herself In The Human Being Form

Arulmigu Adhiparasakthi Siddhar Peedam, the Holy Shrine is situated at Melmaruvathur, Tamil Nadu, 92 kms south of Chennai along the NH-45. This place, where the Siddhar Peedam is situated, is being considered as the mostHoly place for the past 2000 years. It is in this place, where21 Siddhars, both men and women, attained Jeeva Samaadhi (leaving the mortal body, but living in astral plane).  These 21 Siddhars belong to various religions.

In these Holy Lands at Melmaruvathur, where the current Siddhar Peedam is consecrated, stood a Neem tree and a huge Snake mound underneath it.  One day, in 1960s, milk began to ooze out from the aforesaid Neem Tree.  Wonderstruck by the miracle, people in the surrounding villages, thinking it to be a Divine Happening, drank the oozing milk.  The milk was delicious though the sap of the Neem tree will always taste bitter.  It served as a miracle-medicine for curing the various diseases of the village people. The people slowly started realizing the Divine Power and Grace of the tree.

On 28th November 1966, there was a violent storm in Tamil Nadu. The Snake mound under the Neem tree was eroded in the heavy rain. The Neem tree (from which the milk oozed out) also got uprooted due to the violent gusty winds.The Swayambu (Swayambu means “self-manifested” or that which is created by its own accord) emerged beneath the uprooted Neem tree. 

People then understood the revelation that it was because of the power of The Swayambu, the milk had high medicinal values, and the place became so sacred. The Sanctum Sanctorum of today’s SiddharPeedam is established in this very same place. The Swayambu is situated right in front of the Adhiparasakthi statue.

In 1971, the first Oracle came through His Holiness, The Adigalar and The Power prophesied that, “it’s descending to earth as The Mother and She should be worshipped as the Goddess Adhiparasakthi, and the world would go through a Spiritual Revolution and a New Renaissance would emerge’.

Initially, The Swayambu alone was worshipped for many years. Thereafter, on 25thNovember 1977, the idol of Mother Adhiparasakthi was installed in the Sanctum Sanctorum. Mother Adhiparasakthi instructed the unique form of this idol through Her Oracles. 

The idol is one metre tall, seated on a thousand-petal lotus seat, with Her right leg folded and the left leg resting on the lotus petal. The thousand-petal lotus signifies and denotes meditation. She holds the bud of a lotus in Her right hand and the fingers of Her left are folded in a way depicting the Chin Mudra. Her hair is plaited and knotted upwards like a crown.

Vadapalani Andavar Temple is located in Vadapalani, Chennai. The temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga. The temple was renovated in 1920 and a Rajagopuram was built during that time. The temple has grown in popularity believed in part due to the patronage of cinema stars.

Built about 125 years back, this much hallowed and regularly frequented Lord Muruga Sannidhi has emerged from a thatched shed, an unostentatious one enshrining a Murugan picture only, and established for itself a name on par with ancient places of worship. Around 7000 couples are married here each year.

According to the sthalapurana, one Muruga devotee by name Annaswami Nayakar with his limited means built a small thatched hut and kept a Murugan painting for his personal worship primarily. During his meditation and worship, he used to experience some divine power entering his body and inspiring him to utter some mysterious things, whatever he said in his trance was found true.

His utterance went by the name of ‘arulvakku’ (God blessed statements) and relieved people in several ways, like curing diseases and getting jobs, solemnizing marriages, etc.

There are very many sannidhis in the vast courtyards of the temple, like Varasiddhi Vinayaka, Chokkanathar, Meenakshi Amman, Kali, Bhairava, Shanmuga with Valli and Devasena.

The moolavar in standing posture resembles the Palani Muruga in every respect. In the inner prakara, there are many niches housing Dakshina Murti, Chandikeswar, Mahalakshmi, et al. it has a spacious hall used for conduting marriages and religious discourses. It is one of the most frequented Murugan shrines in the city of Chennai.

Vivekanandar Illam on the Marina Beach, Chennai, built 158 years back, has a long and interesting history. It was meant to store ice and hence it got its popular name, the Ice House.

 Eventually this house became a silent spectator of a series of diverse historical events, some of which have lifted this building to a status of an outstanding historical and cultural monument.

The Government took over the building in 1917 and it has been renovated recently, with a statue of Swami Vivekananda installed. Today, it houses a gallery of 150 rare photographs on the life of Swami Vivekananda.

It also houses a section on India's cultural heritage and on the history of the building itself. The Government of Tamil Nadu named the Ice House as "Vivekanandar Illam", during 1963, the Centenary year of Swami Vivekananda.

Vivekanandar Illam earlier known as Ice House (or) Castle Kernan, a sub-centre of Sri Ramakrishna math, Chennai has a unique place in the history of Ramakrishna movement.

Swami Vivekananda came to Chennai in February 1897, and he stayed at Castle Kernan for nine days. During his nine day stay, he shook India’s national consciousness through his fiery lectures at Chennai.

 Later, Ramakrishna Math (Monastery) Chennai was founded by Swami Ramakrishnananda, a brother disciple of Swami Vivekananda.

 The Math functioned from here during its first 10 years (1897-1906) until it got moved to the current location at Mylapore, Chennai. In 1963, during the Birth Centenary of Swami Vivekananda, the Government of Tamil Nadu renamed the Castle Kernan as Vivekanandar Illam (Illam means house in Tamil) or ‘Vivekananda House’.

In 1997, on the eve of the Centenary of Swamiji’s return to India and his stay at Vivekanandar Illam, the Government of Tamilnadu at the request of the Ramakrishna Math, leased out the Vivekananda House for 99 years. 

Vivekanandar Illam now houses a Permanent Exhibition on Indian Culture and Swamiji’s Life, maintained by the Ramakrishna Math and is a source of inspiration to thousands of people who visit it every year.

As part of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai has launched a Project called “EXPERIENCE VIVEKANANDA” in Vivekanandar Illam an initiative that lets the visitors experience Swami Vivekananda’s personality and message through their heart and soul and assimilate his teachings so as to enable them to put Swamiji’s teachings into practice in their lives.

The project is designed in such a manner that it will fit all age groups, but special emphasis is given to youth and children as to inculcate strength, courage, self-confidence, unselfishness, patriotism and service to the nation in their young minds.

Velankanni Church, also called as the 'Mecca of the Christians', is one of the beautiful churches located at Eliot's beach in Besant Nagar. The principal shrine of this Velankanni church is Mother Mary and she is also prayed and worshipped by the people as the Lady of Health. And though, it is known as the 'Mecca of Christians' people of all different castes crowd in the feet of the Virgin Mary to receive her blessings

Vailankanni is fondly known as the 'Lourdes of the East' because like Lourdes in France, millions of pilgrims visit the Shrine throughout the year, praying to Our Lady for various needs and thanking her for the favors received through her intercession.

Tradition recounts that Mother Mary appeared with the Infant Jesus in this small hamlet at the end of the 16th or in the early 17th century. Ever since, Vailankanni is the most important destination and almost the synthesis of all Marian Sanctuaries for the pilgrims of the world.

The crowds of pilgrims come here regardless of creeds and languages.  Our Lady of Vailankanni devotions down through the centuries have proved the Shrine to be of divine origin and has assumed international character. Mary, the focus of unity at Vailankanni, is a clear proof of international, multicultural, and religious harmony.

Annual Feast Of Our Lady Of Health, Vailankanni

Celebrated from 29th August to 8th September - 8th September the Birth Day of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

More than 20 lakh pilgrims from all the corners of India and from other Countries throng the Shrine.
Holy Mass is celebrated in six languages, fourteen times a day during the Feast.

Car Procession of Our Lady of Health, takes place at 8.00 p.m.

Everyday hoisting of the Our Lady's flag, takes place at 12.00 noon.

The Grand Annual Feast commences with the hoisting of Our Lady's Flag at 6.30 p.m. on 29th August. The Bishop of Thanjavur is the main celebrant on this day.

The Feast concludes with the dismounting of Our Lady's Flag at 6.00 p.m. on 8th September. The Rector & Parish Priest is the main celebrant on the concluding Mass.

The Feast Mass is celebrated on 8th September at 6.15 a.m. in the Shrine open-air auditorium, presided over by the Bishop of Thanjavur.

Muttukadu is situated at a distance of 36 km from Chennai. The backwaters at Muttukadu are one of the favorite spots for the visitors, as they offer a host of water spots facilities. You can enjoy boating and wind surfing here. It is an attempt by the Tamil Nadu government to lure people towards the Gateway of South, which was formerly known as Madras. Muttukadu Boat House even conducts competitions and training camps for passionate water spot lovers.

In July 2009, TTDC inaugurated a new bamboo boathouse and a floating boat jetty at the Muttukadu boating facility. The boathouse, with a special roof made of bamboo, has a lounge, from where visitors can watch the boats, and a restaurant. The building has been constructed at a cost of 8.7 million and the floating jetty at a cost of 1.2 million. A couple of high-speed aqua scooters with a seating capacity of three was also introduced at a cost of 1.35 million, which has received good patronage. The scooters can sail at an average speed of 120 km/hour
