Gandhi Memorial Museum at Madurai has been built and organised by Gandhi Smarak Nidhi. There are ample places in South India which are important in relation to Gandhiji. Since, he has visited Tamil Nadu 14 times, among all of them  Madurai city got its distinct place of its own.  It was in Madurai in the year 1921, Gandhiji adopted for the first time the line cloth as his mode of dress, which made him known throughout the world as "The Half  Naked Fakir".  

It was in Madurai again that the doors of great Meenakshi Amman Temple were thrown open  to  Harijans, thus winning a historic battle against "Untouchability".  Gandhiji visited the Temple in the year 1946 along with Harijans as a triumph for the cause of Harijan Temple entry.  The Gandhi Memorial Trust has allocated Ten Millions Rupees for the purpose of setting up Gandhi Memorial Museum in selected seven places in India associated with the life of Gandhi.  

The Gandhi Memorial Museum is meant to be a living  Institutions and not merely a building  preserving and showing exhibits, however precious. It seeks to help an ever increasing number of people particularly the youth of the country to understand and to value the life, work and teachings of Gandhiji.The Picture Gallery presents a visual biography of Gandhiji. It contains photos, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, quotations, and some original articles used by Gandhiji (Relics and replicas). Special Exhibition on "India Fights for Freedom" with 265 illustrations, depicting the history of the Freedom Movement, greets you first.  

The Gandhi Memorial Museum at Madurai was the first of its kind to be completed and it was inaugurated by Shri Jawaharlal Nehru on 15th April, 1959. The Museum serves to propagate the ideals of Gandhiji. Exhibitions, Seminors, Study Circle meetings, Group discussions, Summer Camps for students, Fine Arts training courses for children and classes on Yogasana and Naturopathy are organised periodically.  A Science Park has been put up for the benefit of school children.  Examinations for students on 'Gandhiji's life and Thought' are regularly conducted. 

   

Gandhi Memorial Museum conducts an Educational Programme for the students of the Colleges and High Schools of Madurai City.  They undergo a methodical one day study course of 7 hours duration, on the history of "Indian Freedom Movement" and on a brief study of "Gandhiji's life".  The courses are Class room study, Film and Slide shows and Museum Gallery tour.  A Class room is set up with Film Projection annexe for this purpose in the second floor of the Museum section.  The Educational programme is a regular activity of the Museum.    

      

The Gandhi Memorial Museum, Madurai is an autonomous Registered Society and is administered by a committee which includes Gandhian leaders, Educationalists, Social Workers and representatives form the State and the Central Governments.

Gandhiji, during his visit to Madurai stayed in the residence of Sri Ramji Kalyanji, 175-A, West Masi Street, Maduraiwho respectfully invited him to his house, on 21.09.1921. During his stay there at night he was mentally agitated and worried to think of the various farmers and poor people on his way dressed in scarce cloths that is only a small towel like dhothi around the waist and were shivering with cold, while he was  wearing long turbans khurtha and dhoties. 

So overnight he took a decision that he should be a model to everyone and to dress in a simple manner like the peasants and poor people he witnessed in his journey to Madurai and he carried out this from the very next day itself. On 22-09-1921 (the next day) morning all were shocked to see him in his new pattern of dress and Gandhiji explained them about his decision and he followed this throughout his life. Then he attended the meetings in Madurai (The place now called as Gandhi Pottal) at 0700 hrs, explaining the reason for his new mode of dress therein. Then he attended the meeting at Karaikudi and returned to his destination.

Located in the Nagercoil town of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, the ‘Nagaraja Temple’ is dedicated to the serpent king Vasuki. The presiding deity of this temple is the five-headed Naga God and is visited by hordes of devotees, especially on Sundays when special Pooja is performed offering milk and turmeric to the deity. 

The temple sees an uncountable footfall of people suffering from Naga Dosha during the Tamil month of Avani (August and September) when some distinct rituals are performed for 12 days.

According to folk tales and legends, once a village girl was cutting grass in the area when all of a sudden she noticed blood oozing out of her axe after accidentally hitting a stone. She hurriedly went to the village and brought few villagers here, out of which one villager recognized the stone as an idol of a five headed snake. 

Thereafter, the temple dedicated to Nagaraja was built with its walls made of mud and roof made of coconut leaves. The main sanctum of the temple still has these mud walls and thatched roof with the small stone idol of Nagaraja placed on the soil. 

The soil underneath the idol remains wet as it is believed that the blood is still oozing out of the deity till date. It is believed that this soil holds special powers and can cure any skin ailments; the soil is also given as prasadam to the visitors of the temple.

The architecture of the temple is quite simple with scores of sculptures and images of different snakes adorning the walls, trees and pond around. The main sanctum enshrines the deity and is guarded by two huge statues of five-headed serpents. Inside the temple premises, you will also find Shivlinga and idol of Vishnu in Anant Shayana position.

One of the very unique temples in India located amidst tranquil and peaceful settings, a visit here is sure to leave you with a blissful experience.

Thai Brahmmotsavam in January-February; Aavani Sundays and Aavani Aslesha (Aayilyam) star day and Krishna Jayanthi in August-September; Navarathri in September-October and Tirukarthikai in November-December are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

Sikkal Singaravelan Temple – It Is One Of The Oldest Hindu Temple For Both Vishnu And Shiva Dieties

The temple is located in the village of Sikkal, near Nagapattinam in Tamilnadu. Sikkal Singara Velan Temple is one of the most popular Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Muruga and a contender for the unofficial seventh Padai Veedu of Muruga, along with the popular Arupadaiveedu (six abodes of Lord Muruga).

It is one of the rare traditional Hindu temples that have both Shiva and Vishnu deities in the same complex. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar.The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva as Navaneetheswarar. However, primary importance is given to Lord Subrahmanya Swamy here.

The temple is regarded as an unofficial 7th Padaiveedu of Muruga, along with the other Arupadaiveedu shrines (6 homes of Lord Muruga). This is the 200th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva sthalam and 88th sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Although it is a Shiva temple it is more famous for the Murugan here and is known as Singaravelan temple. There is a perumal temple next door which is also a unique feature.

Once upon a time, Kamadenu was cursed by lord Shiva, when it ate meat. Later feeling guilty of its action, it got rid of its sin by taking bath in the holy water point of this temple and worshiped here, as told by Lord Shiva. After getting rid of the sin, Kamadenu offered its milk which later become Parkulam (literal meaning: the milk pond), which is located behind the temple.

Six worship services are offered each day here. A number of marriages are performed in this temple in the kalyana mandapam. Bhrammotsavam for Shiva is celebrated in the month of Chittirai, while the Skanda Sashti annual festival is celebrated for 10 days in the month of Aippasi.

On the fifth day of the festival, a bejeweled image of Skanda is gifted with a spear, in Velnedunkanni's shrine, and the image of Skanda is said to break out in sweat upon receipt of the spear. Karthikai asterism each month attracts large crowds here, when the processional image of Singaravelar is placed in the Karthikai Mandapam.

It is this holy water point (The Parkulam) of the temple where Vashista Maharishi performed a pooja here, by making a lingam with the butter from the Parkulam. After completing the pooja he tried to move that lingam, but it sticked to that place, and never moved.

As a result Vashista Maharishi regarded this place as Sikkal. Here the Lord Shiva is called ‘Thiru Vennai Nathar’ (Vennai means butter) as he was made up of butter. Interestingly, Thirukkannankudi - a Vaishnava Divyadesam (near Keevalur nearby) has a legend associated with Vasishta offering worship to an image of Krishna which he had fashioned out of butter.

It is also said that Lord Murugan had got his Vel (weapon) from his divine mother at Sikkal, to kill the Asura, Soorapadman in Srilanka. He performed Soora Samharam (literal meaning: killing Soorapadman) by setting up the base camp in Thiruchendur

The day before the ‘Soora Samharam’, Singaravelar (Lord Murugan) would get the “Vel” (a weapon) from Ambal and the following day he would quell Soora. Prior to this Singaravelar would appear indignant and he couldn’t manage the power of Vel and he started sweating.

Even today, a day before Soora Samharam he will sweat and when they try to wipe the sweat using silk cloth it won’t stop. This is a wonder here and it is called “Sweating wonder”.The temple worship timings are from 5.30 AM to 12.30 PM and evening: 4.30 PM to 9.00 PM.

Legend starts with Lieutenant Ward, an Englishman, who climbed up from the Kunnavan village of Vellagavi to Kodaikanal in 1821 for a survey of Mountain Ranges of Palani. The communities of karalar and vedar who at present are called 'Malayali' and they call themselves as 'Goundars'. The source of the waters of the Kumbakkarai Falls is the River Pamba.The tourists who visit these falls enjoy bathing under the healing waters. The Kumbakkarai Falls remain perennial throughout the year and the water currents are fierce during the rains. The height of the Kumbakkarai Falls is up to 400 meters!

Pazhamudhir Solai Temple – It Is Positioned In The Midst Of Alzagar Hill With Dense Forest

Palamuthir Solai is located near Madurai city. Palamuthir Solai is the last army camp of Lord Muruga where he graces with his both consorts Valli and Deivanai. This temple is stashed between the wild greens of the Alagar hill. There is a small spring above this temple and the water from this spring contains lots of spiritual powers. This temple is at a distance of 19 km from Madurai.

Pazhamudhir Solai is a beautiful temple created in the memory of Lord Subramaniya who is worshipped by several people in southern India. It has great sculptures of Lord Subramaniya carved in wood and marble and is a wonderful temple with giant steps in the front of it.

People worship the temple by moving across the periphery of the temple a several number of times, with the hope that their wish would come true. It is the giant temple of Lord subhramaniya in southern India and one of the most beautiful too. Its located on the hills of Azharar koil and falls in Madurai in Tamil nadu.

The legend has it that this is the place where Lord Muruga disguised himself as a small boy and tested the knowledge of his pious devotee and the poetess Avvaiyar, by asking the question whether she wants sutta palam or sudatha palam (Black berry). Even now there stands the naval tree (blackberry) besides the temple and is worshipped by all.

Out of usual the black berry tree here blossoms in the month of October-November (the month when Sashti festival is commemorated) rather than July-September it is considered to be a world miracle.

People come to this temple to free themselves from the sins, obstacles in marriage or child birth and to have a prosperous life. There are no steps to this temple and so the temple administration started a van service to and fro in this temple. Trekking lovers can use the trekking path in the hill.

Kanyakumari Beach is the Confluence of three oceans Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. Kanyakumari shore is popular world - wide, because it is the only places on earth, where you can see the Sun Rise and Sun Set from the ocean. 

It is the only place in India where one can enjoy the unique spectacle of Sunset and Moonrise simultaneously on full moon days. It is even more special and spectacular on Chitra Paurnami [full moon that occurs in Apr-May] when one can view both the sun and the moon facing each other on the same horizon, a rare sight of unique grandeur, which seems to happen by prior arrangement.

Kanyakumari is located at the southernmost tip of the Indian Peninsula; its former name was Cape Comorin. The Kanyakumari beach is a beautiful sight with multi-coloured sand. The beach here does not really offer one the opportunity to sunbathe on soft golden sands, or to frolic in the waves either. 

The seashore is rocky and dangerous, and there is a manmade wall running along it. People are warned to stay off the rocks, and when if someone ventures out of bounds, he or she is quickly and severely reprimanded by a watchful policeman. There is a lighthouse from where one can get a panoramic view.

The sea is fairly rough, so it is entertaining to watch it beat itself against the rocks and then subside, before it gathers itself up for another attack. With long stretches of sands of many hues, the beach offers a welcome change. The place is also famous for its distinctly beautiful (reddish) sunrise and sunset.A variety of shells are on sale on the Kanyakumari beach.

This temple is one among the six Padai Veedus (Battle Grounds) of Lord Murugan, other five are Palani, Swamimalai, Tirupparangunram, Pazhamudircholai and Thiruchendur. This place represents the site where Subramanya stayed after destroying the demon Surapadman. 

The story of Lord Muruga and Valli has a great message of philosophy. Every one should walk towards the Almighty for liberation from the cycle of births and deaths.

The world we live in is a rented house and what our own is the feet of the Lord. Almost all of us feel that this is ours and are hunting for material wealth and pleasures. Enlightened souls understand this truth and they win illusions and reach the final destination-the feet of the Lord.

Tiruttani is also said to be the place where the Lord Subramanya married Valli - one of his two consorts. This temple has been mentioned in the Sangam period work Tirumurugaatruppadai composed by Nakkeerar.

According to legend, Devayani, daughter of Indra married Lord Murugan and was presented Indra's elephant Airavatam as part of his dowry offering. Upon Airavatam's departure Indra found his wealth waning.

Lord Subramanya is said to have offered to return the white elephant, however Indra refused to accept a gift that he had made and instead requested that the elephant face his direction, hence the image of the elephant in this temple also faces the east. 

The hill temple is reachable by a motorable road and is also accessed through a plight of 365 steps. The temple has 4 enclosures and a series of temple towers. There is a shrine to Aapat Sahaaya Vinayakar who helped the Murugan in winning Valli's hand in marriage.

The processional image of Murugan is housed in a Rudraksha tower. The large ornament adorning the image of Subramanya is decorated with green stones and is of great beauty. 

Lord Muruga is seen holding Vajra Hastam in his right hand instead of Vel, his regular weapon. There are separate shrines for Valli and Devayani. Sri Aadhi Balasubramanian graces on the wall behind the sanctum sanctorum as a child. Lord Bhairava graces in temple with 4 dogs vehicle representing 4 Vedas. The temple also has five ponds spread around the temple.
