Well, there is actually nothing to fear but only to enjoy when you plan a visit to the quiet hill station of Chikhaldara where you will be transported to a serene zone of just flora and fauna. In fact, if you are really looking for a place to unwind, Chikhaldara is where you should be.

Chikhaldara is located about 100 kilometers north of Amravati and is the only hill station of its kind in the Vidarbha region. It is situated on a mountain range beyond which Maharashtra ends and Madhya Pradesh begins. At a height of 1,088 meters above sea level, Chikhaldara has flourished in terms of flora and fauna because of the good rainfall it receives as compared to other parts of Vidarbha. But what really adds value to Chikhaldara is that it is surrounded on three sides by the borders of the Melghat Project Tiger Area which is spread over an area of about 1,676 square kilometers.

Chikaldara Hill Station has been mentioned even in the Mahasbharata(Hindu Epic) as the place where Bhim had killed the villainous Keechaka in a Herculean bout and threw him into a valley. It came to be known as "Keechakadhara". The name Chikhaldara is later a corruption.

Chikhaldara has an abundance of wildlife, lakes, waterfalls, forts and the place is full of deep valleys. The only coffee growing place in Maharashtra.The place is full of nature so it is not much different for people already living in hilly areas. Not much to offer for people living in places like Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand.The place is ideal for a family vacation. It is not a romantic getaway, but even couples can enjoy a short trip. It is a must visit for animal and nature lovers. People from Delhi or Rajasthan should visit this place for close interaction with flora and fauna.

The Project Tiger area is divided into several smaller wildlife reserves and the Melghat Wildlife Reserve, which is about 780 square kilometers, makes for the entire southern border and partly the western border of Chikhaldara. The Gugamal National Park, which is about 320 square kilometers, is the core zone of the Project Tiger reserve and forms the eastern border of Chikhaldara and partly its northeastern border.In fact, given the spread of the region, Chilkhaldara and Melghat Project Tiger (MPT) are like closely bonded kin. 

If you want to hire any vehicle or want to take a bus to reach Chikhaldara, you have to go to Amravati first. The distance to Nagpur is approximately 230 kilometers which is the nearest airport. For a Pune or Mumbai resident, the travelling distance is about 750 kilometers. There are many luxury buses that ply on the Mumbai – Aurangabad – Nagpur highway. The best season to visit Chikhaldara is from October to June.

Keylong Hill Station - It Is Cut Off From The Rest Of The World Until Summer Arrives Once More

Keylong is the administrative centre of the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Now rife with Buddhist influence, the region had quite a few different rulers in the past ' the Guge kingdom from Tibet, the Sikhs and finally the British, before India won her independence. This little village draws tourists for a variety of reasons. Trekkers make up the majority of tourists who stop at Keylong to rest. 

There are plenty of monasteries around the hill station that warrant a visit. The Kardang Monastery, belonging to the Drukpa or red hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism is situated on a mountain slope, 5 km from Keylong. The Shaspur Monastery, which is 3 km from Keylong, is famous for paintings that depict the history of 84 Buddhas as well as the devil dance of the Lamas. 

The Tayul Monastery, which is the oldest monastery in the valley, is 6 km from Keylong houses a massive library and statue of Guru Padmasambhava. In addition to the monasteries, other attractions in the region include Gemur, which is famous for Buddhism-inspired arts and crafts, the ancient fort at Gondla, the Triloknath Temple, the Kelang Wazir Temple and the Pin Valley National Park.

The people of Keylong practice Buddhism. Every festival celebrated sees the inclusion of Lamas and monks. The annual Lahaul Festival showcases the best of Buddhist culture that is embraced willingly by the people of this region. The Tibetan influence finds its way into the food they prepare as well. 

Keylong experiences a long winter that begins in October and ends in April. During these months, the Rohtang Pass is closed due to heavy rainfall. Keylong is cut off from the rest of the world until summer arrives once more. The average winter temperature is -2 degree Celsius. Summer brings colour to the hill station and is a perfect time to visit Keylong. The average temperature for summer is 25 degree Celsius. While the days are hot and the nights cooler, and carrying woollen clothing is a must. Keylong receives little rain throughout the year.

Keylong has neither private nor government buses operating within the city. Since this beautiful little hill station has only one main road called Mall Road, there is no need for buses or vans to run in Keylong. During the summer, however, buses do commute between Manali and Keylong. During this time, tourist buses are available to visit the many interesting monasteries and natural wonders in and around Keylong.The summer, which begins in May and ends in October is the best time to visit Keylong. The weather is pleasantly cool and light woollen clothing during this time should be sufficient.

Keylong does not have an airport of its own. The closest is the Bhuntar Airport in Kullu Manali. The airport is considered to be a challenging one for pilots when it comes to landing as the only runway is set in a valley and surrounded by peaks. There are plans to upgrade the airport to improve connectivity. The airport is connected to Delhi and Chandigarh via Air India Regional and Deccan Charters. Dharamsala's Gaggal Airport is close to Keylong as well. The airport has many flights to Delhi via Air India, Spice Jet, and Jagson Airlines. Jagson Airlines also connect Dharamsala to Chandigarh and Kullu Manali.

Agumbe Hill Station - It Is Home To Several Rare Species Of Medicinal Plants

Agumbe is known for its scenic beauty and bio-diversity. Nestled on a plateau on top of Someshwara Ghat, it is located at a distance of 380 km from Bangalore. Situated in Shimoga district of Karnataka, Agumbe gets its sobriquet because it receives 7,640 mm of mean annual rainfall, the second highest annual rainfall in India.

Agumbe is surrounded by rich biodiversity and the hill station borders one of the last surviving lowland rain forests. Since Agumbe is home to several rare species of medicinal plants like Garcinia, Myristica, Listsaea, Diospyrous, Hoiligarna, Eugenia and Ficus among others, it is also called ‘Hasiru Honnu’ which means ‘green is gold’. 

The whole area and the reserve forests around Kundapur, Shankaranarayana, Hosanagara, Sringeri and Thirthahalli are collectively referred to as the Agumbe Rainforest Complex and form one of the largest contiguous forest stretches left in India. During rains, Agumbe and the surrounding region come alive with several waterfalls; Kunchikal Falls, Barkana Falls, Onake Abbi Falls and Jogigundi Falls are some of the popular ones.

Most tourists visit Agumbe to trek through its forests or to visit the waterfalls. Trekking to the Kudlu Theertha Falls or Nishani Gudda offers a once in a lifetime experience. (But also beware of the leeches that infest the forests.) The high points of the treks are the visual treats that Agumbe offers. Sunset Point, a gallery erected to view the sunset, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and even the Arabian Sea on a clear day. Remnants of temples dating back to the Hoysala Empire are also worth a visit.

Agumbe served as the setting for India’s most popular fictional town, Malgudi in the TV series Malgudi Days (that itself was based on the eponymous book by R K Narayan). Doddamane or the Big House, which Swamy lives in, is over 100 years old and still stands proudly here.

India’s sole permanent rainforest research station is based at Agumbe. It is also equipped with India’s first automatic weather station. The station exclusively monitors changes in rain forests. Agumbe is also called King Cobra capital because of the high number of snakes of the species being found here. Interestingly, despite the high density of King Cobras in the region, incidents of snake-human conflict are rare. The Agumbe Rainforest Research Station has pioneered the world’s first radio-telemetry project on the King Cobra. Insights gained from the ecological study are being put into practice into King Cobra management.

The best time to visit the place is during monsoon, when the hill station is full of sparkling streams and several waterfalls.

Rishop Hill Station - It Has A Great View Of Snow Capped Himalayan Mountain Rage

Rishop is a tourist village in the Lava – Lolegaon Circuit in Kalimpong sub-division. This used to be an inaccessible village with few households and step farming dependent on monsoon rain till tourists discovered this hidden treasure of Eastern Himalaya.

The main attraction of staying at Rishop is the serene environment and great views of snow capped Himalayan mountain range from here. The surrounding destinations of Lava, Lolegaon, Pedong, Rishi, Aritar are all within close distance and can be visited as part of a day sightseeing tour.

During the initial days, one had to trek about 5 kms from Lava to reach here. Today you can drive to Rishop (9 kms) through a motorable road from Lava. The village is full of small resorts that offer basic rooms and amenities.

Tiffindara View point – Less than 2 kms from your hotel is the hilltop of Tiffindara. The sunrise view from the hill top is a major attraction. Parts of Nathula and Jelepla that connects India with Tibet are visible from here. On a clear day you can see Kanchenjunga range of snow capped mountains in its full glory from here.

Lava – The famous tourist destination of Lava is just 9 kms away. There is a trek route through which the distance is just 5 kms. You can visit the Lava Jamgyong Kongtrul Monastery.

Kolakham – A relatively new destination, this is the hill station just across the hill from Rishop. The aerial distance could hardly be 3 kms but the road from Rishop to Kolakham travel through Lava and the total distance is about 21 kms. The village is adjacent to Neora Valley National Park and the famous Changey falls is about 5 kms further from Kolakham.

Lolegaon – About 34 kms from Rishop, Lolegaon is a picturesque village that can be visited on a day tour from here. You can visit the forest guest house or take a walk amongst the heritage forest with its Canopy walk. There is another sunrise point in Lolegaon known as Jhandidara.

Pedong – 23 Kms from Rishop, Pedong can be part of your day tour itinerary. Here you can take part in adventure activity such as rock climbing, mountain biking and archery. You may drive further downhill to the Bengal Sikkim boarder at Rishi and spend some time besides Rishikhola, a small stream that acts as a boundary between Bengal and Sikkim.

Tamhini Hill Station - It Is One Of The Wettest Destination In India

Tamhini Ghat is one of the best choices to see nature at its best and also pack in a little adventure. It is during this time that the deep brown hills turn a verdant green and provide a feast for the eyes. The value addition is that you can also explore the backwaters of Mulshi Dam and spice up your vacation with a bit of river rafting.

Tamhini Ghat can be accessed from Mumbai via the Mumbai-Goa Highway. Reach Kolad and after crossing the bridge over river Kundalika, take the left turn that leads to Pune via the Mulshi Dam backwaters. Tamhini Ghat is the stretch between Kolad and these backwaters. 

The gradual climb opens the doors to a different world of green velvety carpets, gushing streams, dark grey clouds stooping low, and the occasional waterfalls. These impromptu waterfalls caused by the rains – some trickling down the hill smoothly and some literally gushing down in torrents – attract tourists from far and wide.  

The rains turn the parched land into a carpet of green with plants and flowers in full bloom. The hills stretch towards the skies like giant walls, partly covered by mist. And all along is a mysterious and enchanting play of light and shadows with the overbearing clouds and the rain creating an effect quite like a flickering lantern. 

Tamhini Ghat is simply ethereal with its sweeping views and is definitely less crowded than its cousin, Malshej Ghat. In fact, every turn in the landscape holds a surprise, offering fantastic sights. There is also a temple here dedicated to the goddess Vanjai that lies almost hidden amongst dense vegetation. The path to it will remind you of the forests that you may have read of in fairytales.

From the Tamhini Ghat you can take the road that leads to the Mulshi Dam backwaters which will also lead you to the gigantic waterfall at Palse. This particular waterfall is quite a hit with the young crowd and don’t be taken aback if you see people actually jostling each other to get absolutely drenched. 

As you approach the Mulshi backwaters, you will come across many resorts where you can opt to stay overnight and enjoy the early morning view of the lake. Further ahead is Kolad which is now becoming immensely popular for river rafting that you can do on the river Kundalika. The currents are strong and it is the only river in Maharashtra where you can experience white water rafting. Kolad now has several cottages and resorts where you can book a room.

Aru Valley is a small yet self-sufficient scenic village located 12 km from Pahalgam. The drive up to the village is alluring too. The location of the village among the grasslands, make this place a tourist delight. It is reachable by walking along a mountain path. 

The village also serves as the start point for trekking to Kolahoi glacier. Another long trek for the serious trekker is to Sonmarg, which can be covered in 3 days! Besides, the valley is also known to be a good site for camping.

Here, you can have a glimpse of Kolohoi Peak, 5370 mtrs. Another trek from Lidderwat leads to the most desired twin Lakes, Tarsar 3794mtrs & Marsar 3788 mtrs (2-3 days trek).

Best Time/ Season  to Aru Valley

Aru Valley has a cool and pleasant climate in summers and very cold climate in winters and the best season for tourism is from March to November.

Winters (October to February) are chilly and snow bound. The minimum mercury level goes below sub zero levels and the region mostly covers receives fresh snowfall. The views of the landscape are excellent with snow covered hilly terrains.

Summers (March to June) are warm and pleasant. The temperature in this hilly region ranges between 11°C and 25°C. Intermittent showers are seen during this period. There is no snowfall but snow can be found on high altitudes. Best for Amarnath Yatra

Monsoons (July to September) are very scanty. The region becomes highly humid during this period.

Ketti Valley View Point is a popular vantage point situated on Ooty - Coonoor Road in Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu. It is one the most beautiful sightseeing places in Ooty.Ketty valley is one of the prime importances in South India, because it offers majestic views of hills and tea plantation. Ketti is divided into two parts- Upper Ketti and Lower Ketti. Upper Ketti is another village called Yellanahalli, which is located on the main Coonoor to Ooty road. This is the location of Needle Industries the manufacturers of Pony Needles. The people of Ketti are manual labourers in majority. The agriculture, rearing livestock, masonry constitute the majority of the work done by the individuals in this place. In addition to this, they also take up jobs in the surrounding industrial establishments, such as the needle industries, mushroom factory and many others. 

Also known as Switzerland of Nilgiris, the Ketti Valley is a heaven for nature lovers and photographers. The view of Ketti from the viewpoint is majestic and often compared to views of Switzerland. Nature lovers, adventurists, experience seekers and even casual travellers will love the view from this viewpoint. There is also a telescope room to get a closer view of the valley and surroundings.

This valley also houses a popular brand of the needle making industry, known as Pony Needles. There is not much to see in the valley apart from indulging in the pleasant atmosphere of Ketti Valley. Ketti town is connected by Nilgiri Express and lies between Coonoor and Ooty stations. From there, local transportation modes like taxis and autos are available to the Ketti Valley.Summer is the best time to enjoy a pleasing view of the valley.
