Sikkal Singaravelan Temple – It Is One Of The Oldest Hindu Temple For Both Vishnu And Shiva Dieties

with 0 Comment

SIKKAL SINGARAVELAN TEMPLE

AT

NAGAPATINAM

The temple is located in the village of Sikkal, near Nagapattinam in Tamilnadu. Sikkal Singara Velan Temple is one of the most popular Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Muruga and a contender for the unofficial seventh Padai Veedu of Muruga, along with the popular Arupadaiveedu (six abodes of Lord Muruga).

It is one of the rare traditional Hindu temples that have both Shiva and Vishnu deities in the same complex. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva as Navaneetheswarar. However, primary importance is given to Lord Subrahmanya Swamy here.

The temple is regarded as an unofficial 7th Padaiveedu of Muruga, along with the other Arupadaiveedu shrines (6 homes of Lord Muruga). This is the 200th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva sthalam and 88th sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Although it is a Shiva temple it is more famous for the Murugan here and is known as Singaravelan temple. There is a perumal temple next door which is also a unique feature.

Once upon a time, Kamadenu was cursed by lord Shiva, when it ate meat. Later feeling guilty of its action, it got rid of its sin by taking bath in the holy water point of this temple and worshiped here, as told by Lord Shiva. After getting rid of the sin, Kamadenu offered its milk which later become Parkulam (literal meaning: the milk pond), which is located behind the temple.

Six worship services are offered each day here. A number of marriages are performed in this temple in the kalyana mandapam. Bhrammotsavam for Shiva is celebrated in the month of Chittirai, while the Skanda Sashti annual festival is celebrated for 10 days in the month of Aippasi.

On the fifth day of the festival, a bejeweled image of Skanda is gifted with a spear, in Velnedunkanni's shrine, and the image of Skanda is said to break out in sweat upon receipt of the spear. Karthikai asterism each month attracts large crowds here, when the processional image of Singaravelar is placed in the Karthikai Mandapam.

It is this holy water point (The Parkulam) of the temple where Vashista Maharishi performed a pooja here, by making a lingam with the butter from the Parkulam. After completing the pooja he tried to move that lingam, but it sticked to that place, and never moved.

As a result Vashista Maharishi regarded this place as Sikkal. Here the Lord Shiva is called ‘Thiru Vennai Nathar’ (Vennai means butter) as he was made up of butter. Interestingly, Thirukkannankudi - a Vaishnava Divyadesam (near Keevalur nearby) has a legend associated with Vasishta offering worship to an image of Krishna which he had fashioned out of butter.

It is also said that Lord Murugan had got his Vel (weapon) from his divine mother at Sikkal, to kill the Asura, Soorapadman in Srilanka. He performed Soora Samharam (literal meaning: killing Soorapadman) by setting up the base camp in Thiruchendur

The day before the ‘Soora Samharam’, Singaravelar (Lord Murugan) would get the “Vel” (a weapon) from Ambal and the following day he would quell Soora. Prior to this Singaravelar would appear indignant and he couldn’t manage the power of Vel and he started sweating.

Even today, a day before Soora Samharam he will sweat and when they try to wipe the sweat using silk cloth it won’t stop. This is a wonder here and it is called “Sweating wonder”.The temple worship timings are from 5.30 AM to 12.30 PM and evening: 4.30 PM to 9.00 PM.

It was constructed between 14th and 16th centuries and the impressive fort reflects the glorious history of the Kurnool region. It was initially believed to have been built by Achyuta Devarayalu of Vijayanagar Empire.

Konda Reddy Buruju was a sentinel and was used as a prison. Chronicles has it that, a revolutionary named Konda Reddy was imprisoned by the Nawab of Kurnool when he tried to oppose him.

Konda Reddy (1597-1643), the last ruler of Alampur defeated KurnoolNawab who was a subordinate and an associate of the Golkonda Kings several times. After a prolonged battle Konda Reddy was captured and imprisoned in the fortress.

Because of his valour and untiringly resolve to fight the Muslim rulers, the fort came to be known as Konda Reddy Buruju. He escaped from the fortress digging a tunnel across the River Krishna toAlampur and ultimately lost his kingdom to Golkonda Kings.

There was once a tunnel across the River Tungabhadra to Alampur on other side. This is the site of the prison where Konda Reddy had breathed his last and hence the tower was subsequently named in his memory.

The bastion appears in the shape of a huge pillar and consists of two storeys. From the highest point of the monument, visitors can enjoy the panoramic view of Kurnool. It is also believed that the rulers of Gadwal Kingdom used the tunnel here to escape from the Muslim conquerors during 17th century. The tunnel was closed many decades ago.

TRADITIONAL BEAUTY OF MAHABUBNAGAR

Mahabubnagar district of Telangana is well known for its rich heritage, reflected by the cultural imprint of several dynastic rules and chieftains in the region since many centuries. Of these, Alampur and Gadwal are main attractions in the district. The heritage site of Alampur in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana is home to the Navabrahma temples and famous Jogulamba Temple in one temple complex. These are believed to be built during the 7th – 8th Centuries A.D. and a total of nine temples were built on the banks of the river Tungabhadra where Lord Shiva manifests in 9 different forms.

Jogulamba Temple - Mahabubnagar district

Jogulamba Temple, which is considered one of the 18 Shaktipeetam’s attracts thousands of visitors each day. Alampur is considered historically as an important centre of the Chalukyas. Alampur is also the site where the historical Sangameshwara temple was relocated after its submergence by the backwaters of Srisailam dam. Alampur temple is also home to the famous Site Museum, that houses rare artefacts and other items dating back to several centuries. Alampur, is located approximately 220 km from Hyderabad and easily accessible through Hyderabad-Bangalore highway. Alampur road is the nearest railway station located at a distance of nearly 9 km. Haritha Hotel Alampur is the place to rest for tourists visiting the Navabramha temples in Alampur. Located close to the Tungabhadra River, the hotel offers quality accommodation and food services.

Gadwal is a famous place among these and was called ‘Vidvadgadwala’ historically. Mahabubnagar district in Telangana is also referred to as territorial district, because it had many territorial rulers than any other place in the state. The then ruler and strongman of Gadwal called Peda Soma Bhupaludu (Somanadri) constructed this fort during 17th Century. To this day, the huge walls used for construction of the fort and the moats make Gadwal Fort really strong and impregnable.

Chennakesava Swamy Temple - Gadwal fort

Today after three centuries, it remains intact. The fort precincts are home to deity Sri Chennakesava Swamy Temple, Sri Ramalayam, Sri Venugopala Swamy temple, and a water body. The ruler Pedda Soma Bhupala had defeated the Nawab of Kurnool then and brought a 32-feet long Cannon as a symbol of victory, which is the biggest in India and is still seen in the fort. The government has taken many steps to restore the heritage of Gadwal fort. It is located near Gadwal town, between Hyderabad and Kurnool at a distance of 16 km from Erravelli Junction on Bangalore-Hyderabad NH 7. Haritha hotel here caters to tourists visiting the Gadwal fort which is well furnished with A/C Suite Rooms and Non-A/C Rooms.
