Kalighat Kali Temple - Originally It Was A Small Hut Beyond Era

KALIGHAT KALI TEMPLE

AT

KOLKATTA

Located in one of Kolkata’s oldest neighborhoods, Kalighat is a renowned center of goddess worship and place of pilgrimage, where devotees have come for centuries to surrender themselves at the feet (literally) of the Divine Mother.

Local folklore relates that Kalighat, once a jungle region, was inhabited by head-hunting tribal people and Kapaliks (“skull-bearers”) who worshipped the dark goddess with human sacrifice.

Mythologically, such references to “tribal people” and outcasts are often employed to assert Kali’s position as a marginal goddess who exists outside of the societal fold.

Although the origins of this shakti pith are obscured in myth, allusions to an important Kali temple in this area date from the middle of the 12th century and it cannot be argued that this place has a direct association with Kali from ancient times (Roy 16).

The original temple was a small hut. A small temple was constructed by King Manasingha in the early Sixteenth century. The present temple was erected under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family of Banisha. It was completed in 1809.

The Haldar family claims to be the original owners of the temple property. But this was disputed by the Chowdhrys of Banisha. In the nineteen sixties a committee was formed for the administrative management of the temple with representation from the Government and the Haldar family.

The Government of West Bengal has taken a lot of interest in improving the temple which is also one of the biggest tourist attractions. They have sanctioned funds for improving the temple.

An office cum guest accommodation was constructed at a huge cost some years back. The building is now being run by the Tourism Development corporation as a guest house. Accommodation is available for pilgrims here

The temple is crowded on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. It is less crowded early in the morning before 8.A.M. If you can, plan your trip for a Wednesday early morning. Make your visit to the temple a worthwhile and pleasant experience.

FEW THINGS YOU MUST DO WHEN YOU TRAVEL

TO KOLKATA DURING THE DURGA POOJA

There's no place better than Kolkata if you want to experience the real charm of Durga Puja. We would all agree to that. It is the same reason why a lot of travellers come to Kolkata just to experience this Bengali festival. While you are there in the city during the Durga Puja, here are a few things you must experience.

Pandal hopping

That goes without saying, right? If you are in Kolkata during the Durga Puja and you don’t do pandal hopping, your entire trip is a waste of time. But prepared to walk a lot and to face a lot of crowd. Trust us it is worth going through all that. Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata are known to display some of the most vivid forms of art. Each pandal is tastefully decorated there’s a full fledged competition between the Durga Puja committees to win the coveted award of being the best in the city. Right from using waste materials to steel, a lot of creativity and hard work goes into the making of a pandal. And what you get to see as a result is a theme-based pandal and a durga idol to match the same. Once you start exploring these beauties, time will fly and your camera memory will be full before you know it.
Not-to-miss pandals:
Jodhpur Park
Bosepukur
Kumartuli
Badamtala Ashar Sangha

Eat!

Bengalis are known to be one of the biggest foodie communities in the country. Bongs need an excuse to eat. The reason why you will get plenty of opportunities to sample some of the best flavours you can imagine. Right from the street food, including the fuchkas (golgappas), and the egg and chicken rolls, to the mishtis (sweets like roshogolla and authentic mishti doi) to the full fledged Bengali cuisine restaurants serving the all-time favourites like maachher jhol, and luchi-kosha maangsho, Durga Puja is the best time to be explore the entire Bengali cuisine.

Not-to-miss eateries:
Bhojohori Manna
6 Ballygunj Place
Ice Berg roll joint at Golpark

Participate in Dhunuchi Naach

Dress yourself in the traditional Bengali attire--dhoti-kurta for men and white saree with red border for women, and participate in this frenzied yet graceful dance that takes place only during the Durga puja. When the evening aarti is done on Ashtami, earthen pots called Dhunuchis are filled with coconut shells and lit up to serve as incense burners. These are used by devotees dressed in the traditional Bengali attire to do the Dhunuchi Naachi, a form of dance that is done to the beats of that dhaks (drums). The dance acts as a form of worship to Goddess Durga while the aarti is being done by the priest. Although it's a lot of fun in doing this, devotees often get into a frenzy while expecting their faith towards the worship in the form of a dance.

Visit the Bonedi Baaris

Durga Puja celebrations held in the Bonedi Baaris of Kolkata is something that you just can't afford to miss. Bonedi Baari refers to the heritage Bengali houses that are there in the city. These houses are ancient and are known to have housed some of the biggest families of Bengal. If you want to see Durga Puja in its most authentic form, you must visit these houses. The puja done here is based on centuries of tradition and is closely attached to the roots of Bengali culture. Entire family trees become one in these houses every year during the Durga Puja celebrations. Right from the attire to the rituals, Durga Puja is done in its truest form in the Bonedi Baaris.

Not-to-miss Bonedi Baaris:
Shovabazar Raj Bari
Chatubabu Latubabu Baari

Participate in the Bhashaan rituals

Bhashaaan is the Bengali world for Visarjan or immersion ceremony. Done on the day of Dashami or Dussehra, this ceremony is held in order to mark the end of the Durga Puja festivities. Married women dressed in traditional Bengali sarees follow a ritual called shindoor khela, a ceremony very similar to Holi, wherein vermillion is used instead of colours. When the Durga idol is taken to the bank of river Ganga for immersion, it turns into an altogether different kind of celebration. Right from the time the idol is lifted from the pandal to the time it is immersed at the riverbank, people tirelessly dance to the beats of the drums. The kind of enthusiasm that goes into the dancing clearly shows that everyone wants to make the most of the last few moments of Durga Puja, which happens to be the celebration for Bengalis. Take time out to join the procession and dance all your worries away--there can't be a better to celebrate life.

DAKSHINESWAR KALI TEMPLE

AT

KOLKATTA

Dakshineswar Temple was founded on the 31st of May,1855;18 Jaistha 1262 b.s. The holy tithi was of Jagannath Deva Snanyatra. It is situated in North 24 Parganas District, kolkatta,West Bengal India. The Dakshineswar temple was founded on this auspicious day after facing many conflicts.

The Rani Ma called by her people out of adoration, respect and love, installed Sri Jagadishwari Ma, the mother of the universe under the priesthood of Sri Rama Kumar Chattopadhaya. From young Gadadhar's coming to Dakshineshwar along with elder brother Rama Kumar to his transformation into the Avatar of the age, has become a legend now.

The famous Dakshineswar temple which houses the Goddess Kali was founded by Rani Rashmoni following a dream she saw when she was about to start on her pilgrimage to Benaras. A long term plan of the Rani materialized which she had longed to perform when her husband died with unfulfilled wish of constructing a Kali temple.

A dynamic woman, Rani Rashmoni took over the administration of the enormous estate her husband left her. The benevolent administrator, Rani Rashmoni was always in conflict with the stringent British laws and policies. People honored her and loved her for her daring and benevolent spirit.

Dakshineswar temple, bathing ghats, a way from Subarnarekha River to Puri, Imperial Library (present National Library) and Hindu College (present Presidency College) are the testimonials to her benevolent nature.

According to legend Rani Rasmoni had a dream where the goddess Kali instructed her to build a temple. She bought a land on the banks of Hooghly and started the construction.

The temple was finally completed in 1855. She offered the place of the head priest to Ram Kumar Chhattopadhyay, who was the elder brother of Ramakrishna. After the death of Ram Kumar, Ramakrishna overtook the duty as the head priest. Ramakrishna was perhaps the most famous saint and devotee of the goddess Kali. He was also the mentor of Swami Vivekananda.

Dakshineswar temple becomes a center of attraction mainly during the Kali Puja. The temple is decorated wonderfully with flowers and amazing lightingarrangement.

Devotees from early morning start making beeline to offer their prayer to the presiding deity of Dakshina Kali of the temple. The music of beautiful religious songs that play on the temple premise on the day of Kali puja, enhances the religious appeal of the place even more. Beside this, on every “amabashya”, the temple is also decked up beautifully and an elaborate evening arati is also performed.

Kolkatta - Long Weekend Tour To Go And Get The City Of Joy For August 13 to 15

with 0 Comment

You can gather pleasant and unforgettable joys after sightseeing beautiful places in kolkatta

Victoria Memorial

One of the eternal impressions that lingers much after you've left is the lustrous magnificent white Victoria Memorial bordered by lush greenery and wide roads. It was built in honour of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1901, but was completed only two decades later. It displays an impressive collection of colonial-era paintings, manuscripts and other souvenirs, which provide exciting insights into Indian history, right from the advent of the British, up to Independence.

Howrah Bridge

Howrah Bridge is a landmark that has come to symbolize the identity of Kolkata. Commonly referred to as Rabindra Setu and even the Gateway of Kolkata, this structure has become the face of the city owing to its grandeur and majestic appeal. Connecting the city to the Howrah district, this steel structure runs 705 metres long and has eight lanes for traffic. It is said that over a lakh vehicles and 20 lakh commuters cross over it every day. I was lucky enough to see it illuminated by night and it was a sight to behold.

Shopping at New Market

The  market reminded as  Sarojni Nagar in Delhi. With almost 2,000 stalls, New Market is a delight for those who like to hunt for a good bargain. Go straight to the rebuild section of the market, for the famous lal paar sarees, the ones with the white and red borders that women traditionally wear during Durga Puja. Also look out for tussar and vishnupuri silk. These fabrics are gorgeous to drape and make for lovely presents when you get home. There are also several Chinese leather shops where you will get bags, belts, wallets and other accessories at prices that will come as not a surprise, but a shock. Also head to Nahoum and Sons, run by a Jewish family, for their famous fudge (but be warned, it runs out by 12 noon) and other delectable confectioneries.

Boating at the Hooghly river

One of the important landmarks of Kolkata, the Hooghly River pulls a lot of crowd to its banks every day.  I would suggest you carry your camera and a picnic hamper because when you're on a boat on the Hooghly River, minutes can very easily turn into hours. Do capture a panoramic view of the city, and of the two amazing bridges while crossing the river--the Howrah Bridge and the Vidyasagar Setu.

Chinatown

Once home to several tanneries, Chinatown now has a unique character where residents have retained their lineage yet imbibed local customs. Not frequented by too many tourists, the area is now famous for the several Chinese restaurants that dot its periphery. If you want to experience a completely different aspect of the city and of course have some delectable Chinese delicacies--then remember to include Chinatown in your itinerary.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport or Kolkata Airport at Dumdum is among the busiest airports in the country.
